Games

Occasionally, I also play games. Not as much as in my youth, and rarely more than one game at time. But I do like games, even if I don’t consider myself a gamer in the modern sense (and surely neither a pro…).

Here I collect a few links and tips about games I enjoy(ed).

Sensible World of Soccer 2020

Add 100 millions to a career

  1. Go to hexed.it on your browser
  2. Click “Open file” and select your save game
  3. Type “D5DC” in the “Go to” search field (upper right corner) and hit enter. The correct offset becomes selected
  4. Click somewhere in the background so that the cursor is no longer in the “Go to” field
  5. Type value “00E1F505” and you can see it replaces the original values
  6. Click “Export” to save your edited file

Personal records

After playing for about 30 years to SWOS, I collected quite a few accomplishments. I usually do not keep track of all the games’ records I break, and usually these are not many, but for SWOS I made an exception and religiously kept all my best accomplishments throughout this long stretch of playing the game.

Therefore, here are all the records I cared about (or cared to write down).

  • Most number of goals by a single player in a season: 120, Lionel Messi (Napoli, Italy)
  • Most number of scored goals in a single season: 267 (Napoli, Italy)
  • Least number of conceded goals in a single season: 4 (Fram, Iceland)
  • Least number of defeats in a single season: 0 (Fram, Iceland), (Farense, Portugal), (Caen, France), (Levski Sofia, Bulgaria), (Napoli, Italy)
  • Least number of draws in a single season: 0 (Barcelona, Spain), (Fram, Iceland)
  • Most number of goals scored by a defender: 28, Phil Babb (Fram, Iceland)
  • Longest period without conceding a goal, across all competitions: 1404 minutes (15 matches and 54 minutes, Levski Sofia, Bulgaria)
  • Most number of goals by a single player in an European cup: 26, Jurgen Klinsmann (Farense, Portugal), Lionel Messi (Napoli, Italy)
  • Most number of goals scored in the league in a single season: 200 (Farense, Portugal)
  • Most number of goals by a single player in a National cup: 16, Lionel Messi (Napoli, Italy)
  • Longest streak of victories, across all competitions: 48 (Caen, France)
  • Most number of goals by a single player in a National league: 79, Julian Joachim (Farense, Portugal)
  • Most number of goals by a single player in a single match, in any competition: 8, Giuseppe Rossi in Italia vs Sri Lanka 11-0
  • Most number of goals by a single player in an Euro Championship or World Cup: 15, Gianluca Scamacca (Italy)

Then, alongside these records, I kept track of my overall palmares, what and how many single competitions I won across all my careers in SWOS. Some may be missing, but no more than a handful.

Max Payne

Adapt the game to a widescreen monitor

Run Max Payne with the console command “maxpayne.exe -developer”. Select a widescreen resolution, and launch the game. After a level loads, you’ll notice it is obviously stretched. Press F12 until the ingame console appears. Type this command (case sensitive):

MaxPayne_GameMode->GM_ChangeFOV(1.2,0);

Then press F12 until the screen is clear of dev messages.

Sadly, the proportions will still be way off, but at least you now have more horizontal display. Also, you will need to repeat this command every time a new level loads. You might also have to repeat it after certain cut-scenes, or even normal scripted events within the level. Fortunately, you can easily repeat the command just by opening the console and pressing the up key.

Rune

Adapt the game to a widescreen monitor

Load Rune, and select a widescreen resolution from the menu. When you begin a new game, bring up a console (~ key), and type fov 100.

Then quicksave. If you quickload, it will remember your FOV setting. However, it will forget the FOV setting each time you enter a new map.

Therefore, you will need to enter the fov 100 command and quicksave each time you enter a new map. Also, the command doesn’t work in multiplayer.

Serious Sam: The Second Encounter

Adapt the game to a widescreen monitor

Go to <gameDir>\scripts. Open PersistentSymbols.ini. Find these lines:

persistent extern INDEX sam_iScreenSizeI=(INDEX)xxxx;
persistent extern INDEX sam_iScreenSizeJ=(INDEX)xxxx;

Change them to set your resolution (the first one is your horizontal value, the second is your vertical value).

Now find this line:

persistent extern user FLOAT plr_fFOV=(FLOAT)xxx;

Increase the FOV value according to your preference. The default is 90. 100 is recommended for 16:10 displays, and 105 is recommended for 16:9 displays.

Steam

Add anotehr installation path to Steam library

  1. Launch Steam with the -console option on the command line
  2. Click the Console tab that will have appeared now
  3. Run the command library_folder_add /path_to_your_folder/
  4. The output should be: Mounted path /path_to_your_folder/

Move a game to another location in the Steam library

Follow the official instructions.

The Elder Scrolls Online

Install manually Addons on Linux

Addons should work equally well under Windows and Linux, unless there is some external dependency that is Windows-only. To install them, manually, put them into the following directory:

.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/306130/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/Elder Scrolls Online/live/AddOns

Amiga games

As I grew up playing on an Amiga 500, I have fond memories of many games on that platform. It’s been a while, I don’t remember them all, but those that I loved the most were:

  • Another World
  • Toki
  • Altered Beast
  • Sensible Soccer
  • Turrican
  • Chaos Engine
  • Superfrog
  • First Samurai
  • Lotus III
  • Cannon Fodder
  • Golden Axe
  • Last Battle (more the atmosphere than the gameplay)
  • Bubble Bobble
